The first-ever GrandeCon comic book-style event is coming to Grande Prairie on July 15. It also serves as a major fundraiser for Odyssey House.
Executive Director Lisa Watson said the organization was thrilled to bring the event to Grande Prairie with guests including George Takai, Lou Ferrigno, Veronica Taylor and Grande Prairie-born Alex Zahara.
“We are fortunate to have Norm Coyne on our team to help bring these guests to the event. He produced a similar event in Prince George,” says Watson. “All of these guests are inclusive, support prevention domestic violence and share our mission around safety and equality.”
Watson says that while the majority of ticket sales have gone to those in the area, the event is certainly drawing attention from fans everywhere.
“We saw ticket sales all over the province and even some from the BC region. It’s mostly locals planning to come, but it’s good to know that a lot of people are interested.
While there’s lots of fun planned for the event, including a cosplay contest (registrations close July 7), local vendors, and more, there are some rules that must be followed.
“If you are looking to take photos, hug someone or shake their hand, you still need consent. We encourage everyone to interact with our cosplayers in the most appropriate way possible. “, she adds.
No goals have been set for fundraising, but everything helps. The organization hopes it will become an annual staple both as an event and as a fundraiser. The event is scheduled for July 15-17 at the Bonnetts Energy Center. For more details or to buy tickets, visit the GrandeCon website.
